Behind the scenes, the Heritage Railway Association has been hard at work curating a line-up of activities that will bring railway history alive for people of all ages. A brand-new miniature railway provides pint-sized driving thrills, while an under-5s play area ensures that the youngest passengers can join in the fun. Of course, the traditional steam train rides along historic routes remain the main attraction, inviting families to soak up the sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear as they meander past rolling hills and stone bridges.
Arguably the star of the anniversary celebrations will be the Flying Scotsman, one of the most famous steam locomotives ever built. Having delighted enthusiasts and the general public for decades, this majestic engine is set to make a series of special appearances on heritage lines such as the West Somerset Railway. After recent years in which the locomotive spent more time on static display, next year’s programme will see it back in steam more often, with additional trips planned to meet growing demand. Seeing the Flying Scotsman depart a classic station platform, its boiler steaming and its wheels turning, promises to be a highlight for rail fans of all ages.
As the bicentenary year approaches, it is clear that the 200th anniversary of the UK railway will be much more than a commemorative date on the calendar.
