Yorkshire Wolds Railway

Steam Train Near Driffield

The Yorkshire Wolds Railway, situated in the picturesque East Riding of Yorkshire, offers visitors a unique journey into the region’s rich railway heritage. Operating on a restored section of the former Malton and Driffield Junction Railway, the railway provides a nostalgic experience for enthusiasts and families alike.

Visitors can enjoy rides on a diesel-hydraulic 0-4-0 shunter locomotive named Sir Tatton Sykes, which offers cab rides, allowing guests to experience the thrill of operating a heritage locomotive. The railway also features a restored British Rail MK1 BG Full Brake coach, which serves as the visitor centre, offering a glimpse into the past.

For those interested in a more immersive experience, the railway offers glamping accommodations. Guests can choose between uniquely converted railway wagons and eco-friendly pods, all equipped with modern amenities such as en suite facilities, electricity, and comfortable furnishings. The site is dog-friendly, welcoming four-legged companions to join in the adventure.

The railway operates on Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter until the end of October, with additional Wednesday openings during school holidays. Special events, including Father Christmas visits and model railway shows, are held throughout the year, providing additional attractions for visitors.

In August 2024, the Yorkshire Wolds Railway secured nearly £100,000 from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund to construct a new Visitor Centre and Working Facility. This development aims to enhance visitor experiences and support ongoing restoration projects, marking a significant milestone for the volunteer-run railway.
