Yeovil Railway Centre

The Yeovil Railway Centre, established in 1993, is a heritage railway museum located at Yeovil Junction Station in Somerset, UK. It serves as a hub for railway enthusiasts and families, offering a variety of facilities and services that highlight the rich history of the region’s railways.

A central feature of the centre is the Southern Railway turntable, installed in 1947, which has been meticulously restored. Visitors can witness the impressive sight of large steam engines being turned and serviced, providing a unique glimpse into traditional railway operations.

The centre operates a demonstration line approximately one-third of a mile long along the Clifton Maybank spur. During special events, visitors can enjoy steam train rides in historic brake vans or coaches, offering an authentic experience of early 20th-century rail travel.

In addition to the mainline steam excursions, the centre hosts a range of special events throughout the year. These include themed days such as Train & Tractor Day, Halloween events, and the popular Santa Specials during December, which combine festive activities with steam train rides.

The Yeovil Railway Centre also features a well-stocked shop offering a variety of railway-related books, DVDs, model railway items, and children’s toys. The shop is open during events and every Sunday from 10 am to noon, except during Christmas and New Year.

For those interested in a more hands-on experience, the centre offers pre-booked Driver Experience days, allowing visitors to operate a steam locomotive under the guidance of experienced staff. These sessions provide a unique opportunity to engage with the workings of a steam engine and are highly recommended for enthusiasts seeking an immersive experience.

The centre is managed by a dedicated group of volunteers who strive to make each visit memorable. Their passion for railway heritage is evident in the well-maintained exhibits and the warm, welcoming atmosphere they create for visitors of all ages.
