The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway offers an engaging experience for visitors of all ages, regardless of the weather. Located in Porthmadog, the railway provides a scenic train ride through historic narrow-gauge carriages, departing from Porthmadog Station and returning in approximately one hour. The journey is typically hauled by a steam locomotive, with diesel locomotives used during quieter times or when volunteer staff are limited.
During the return trip, passengers can disembark at Pen y Mount Junction station to explore the extensive, all-weather, hands-on railway heritage centre and museum. On most days, visitors also have the opportunity to ride the miniature railway, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to their visit.
Before and after the train ride, guests can visit the well-stocked shop, offering a variety of gifts, toys, railway models, and books. Caffi Russell’s Café serves freshly prepared food and drinks, providing a comfortable setting to relax. A free car park is available for visitors, though it can become full during peak times.
Tickets can be purchased upon arrival and are valid for unlimited travel for the rest of the day, eliminating the need for advance booking. A family ticket, accommodating up to two adults and two children, is priced at £38.80, which includes the train ride, access to the railway centre and museum, and the miniature railway.
