The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust (PRCLT) is dedicated to preserving and operating historic steam locomotives and carriages, offering enthusiasts and visitors a unique glimpse into the golden age of rail travel. Their collection includes a variety of steam locomotives and carriages, many of which are operational and participate in regular heritage line excursions.
Among the notable locomotives is Georgina, a steam locomotive built in 2016 by North Bay Railway Engineering Services. Georgina is based on the W. G. Bagnall’s gauge Sipat class and is built to the gauge of the North Bay Railway. The original Sipat locomotive was built for the Sipat Water Works in India. Georgina was named in a ceremony by BBC newsreader Harry Gration in March 2016. Her first passenger service was on 23 March 2016. In September 2021, the North Bay Railway was purchased by new owners who decided to put Georgina up for sale. In December 2021, Georgina was sold to The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust operating at the Midland Railway Centre.
The Trust’s carriage collection features a range of British Rail Mk1 and Mk2 coaches, many of which are operational and painted in traditional liveries such as Blood and Custard, Lined Maroon, and Lined LMS Maroon. These carriages are used for passenger services, special events, and as support vehicles for the locomotives. For example, the BR Mk1 BCK No. 99040 (21232) is operational and currently in use with the 6201 ‘Princess Elizabeth’, painted in LMS Crimson livery.
The Trust operates heritage line excursions, allowing visitors to experience the charm of vintage steam travel. These excursions are typically scheduled on weekends and during special events, providing an immersive experience into the history of British railways. The Trust also offers educational programs and workshops, aiming to engage the public and foster an appreciation for railway heritage.
For those interested in a more hands-on experience, the Trust provides opportunities to participate in the restoration and maintenance of locomotives and carriages. This involvement offers a unique insight into the technical aspects of steam railway preservation and the chance to contribute to the ongoing legacy of these historic vehicles.
To enhance the visitor experience, the Trust organizes special events, including themed days, gala weekends, and festive celebrations. These events often feature special menu options, live entertainment, and interactive displays, catering to a wide range of interests and age groups.
