The South Tynedale Railway is a heritage narrow-gauge railway operating in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The line runs approximately 5 miles from Alston in Cumbria to Slaggyford in Northumberland, following the route of the former British Rail Alston branch line.
The railway operates from Easter to October, offering a range of special events, including ‘Ride and Stride’ and Teddy Bear Specials. Santa Specials run in December, providing festive experiences for visitors.
Dogs are welcome on the railway and in all areas of the site, including the cafes. A complimentary souvenir dog ticket is available at the ticket office. Bicycles are also permitted on the train, subject to space availability, allowing visitors to explore the surrounding area further.
The South Tyne Trail, a permissive footpath, runs along the track, providing families with an accessible walking route from Alston to Slaggyford stations. Free car parking is available at both stations.
At Alston station, the Crossing Café offers traditional homemade hot and cold food, as well as a selection of homemade cakes. The café is dog-friendly and features a spacious car park with cycle racks.
