The Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust is a community-focused heritage railway dedicated to preserving the industrial railway heritage of Northamptonshire. Situated within the Hunsbury Hill Country Park, southwest of Northampton, the Trust operates a 1.5-mile heritage railway line that features sharp curves and steep gradients typical of industrial railways. Visitors can enjoy train rides in various railway vehicles, including a converted brake van, providing a unique glimpse into the region’s industrial past.
The Trust also boasts a small museum and workshop, both free to visit, offering insights into the restoration and preservation of locomotives and rolling stock. A café, housed in a train carriage, serves as a charming spot for refreshments. For families, a children’s play area is available, ensuring an enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.
Throughout the year, the Trust hosts a variety of events, including special occasions like Christmas train rides, where children can meet Santa on the train and receive a gift. Regular train rides operate every other Sunday from April to October, with loco cab rides and diesel driver experience sessions available for enthusiasts seeking a more hands-on experience.
The Trust is currently closed for winter maintenance, with plans to reopen in May. For the most up-to-date information on reopening dates and upcoming events, please refer to the Trust’s official communications.
