Groudle Glen Railway

Steam Train Near Baldrine

The **Groudle Glen Railway** is a charming narrow-gauge heritage line nestled in a picturesque glen just north of Douglas on the Isle of Man. Affectionately known as “The Line that Goes Uphill to the Sea,” this 2-foot gauge railway offers a delightful blend of natural beauty and Victorian nostalgia.

Established in 1896 by entrepreneur Richard Maltby Broadbent, the railway was designed to transport visitors through the glen to a coastal zoo at Sea Lion Rocks. The line originally operated with a single steam locomotive, *Sea Lion*, and three coaches. Its popularity led to the addition of a second locomotive, *Polar Bear*, and more coaches. The railway thrived until the outbreak of World War I, after which it experienced periods of closure and revival. By the 1960s, the line had fallen into disrepair. However, in 1982, a dedicated group of volunteers began restoration efforts, leading to the railway’s reopening in 1986.

Today, the Groudle Glen Railway operates on summer Sundays from May to September and Wednesday evenings in July and August, with additional special events throughout the year. The journey begins at Lhen Coan station, featuring a replica of the original 1896 canopy building. The train winds through a tree-lined glen, offering passengers serene views of the surrounding woodland. The route culminates at Sea Lion Rocks, perched on the clifftops, where visitors can enjoy panoramic sea views and explore the remains of the historic zoo.

At Sea Lion Rocks, guests can visit the tea rooms, offering a selection of refreshments in a tranquil setting overlooking the sea. The area also features a visitor centre that provides insights into the railway’s rich history and the local environment. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely picnic or simply to relax and soak in the coastal ambiance.

The Groudle Glen Railway offers more than just a train ride; it’s a journey back in time, capturing the essence of Victorian leisure and the natural beauty of the Isle of Man. Whether you’re a railway enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, this heritage line provides a unique and memorable experience.
