Didcot Railway Centre is a 21-acre living museum dedicated to the Great Western Railway, offering visitors an immersive experience into nearly two centuries of railway history. The centre features a vast collection of locomotives, coaches, and wagons, including the original 1932 engine shed, which houses a variety of preserved steam engines. Visitors can explore the carriage shed, showcasing an extensive array of beautifully restored carriages and wagons, and the transfer shed, which houses a unique broad gauge exhibit.
The centre offers a range of facilities to enhance visitors’ experiences. The Engine Shed Café provides a selection of hot foods, including pasties, sausage rolls, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, cakes, and snacks, with options available for those with dietary restrictions. Seating is available both inside and in the ample picnic area, which offers pleasant views of the turntable. The on-site shop offers a variety of items, including books, jigsaws, handcrafted leather goods, and souvenirs such as notepads, pens, badges, and bookmarks. Additionally, the shop houses a rare ‘Lamson Cash Railway’ exhibit dating back to 1905, which is the only working example in the UK.
For families, the centre features an outdoor play area and offers interactive experiences like the Science, Learning & Railways Exhibition, where visitors can learn about the machines that changed the world. The centre also hosts special events throughout the year, including steam and diesel railcar days, and has been used as a filming location for various films and television programmes.
