Steam Train Near Bodmin

The Bodmin and Wenford Railway, a heritage steam railway in Cornwall, offers a range of facilities and services across its stations, enhancing the experience for visitors interested in steam locomotives and historic railways.

At Bodmin General Station, the railway’s headquarters, visitors can enjoy a coffee shop and a gift shop. The station is equipped with a wheelchair-accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities. The main building, constructed by the Great Western Railway in 1887, has been beautifully restored to reflect the 1950s era, adorned in the British Railways (Western Region) color scheme. Events such as Victorian Weekend and Vintage Carriages Day celebrate the station’s historic origins, and visitors are welcome to explore the station and platform on any open day. Bodmin Parkway Station, operated by Great Western Railway Limited, provides parking facilities for mainline passengers. Bodmin Railway trains depart from Platform 3, adjacent to the London-bound platform. The old signal box on the down platform has been converted into a coffee shop, offering a valuable service to mainline travelers, walkers, and Bodmin Railway passengers. Please note that the coffee shop is accessed by stairs from the platform, and there is no provision for wheelchair users at Bodmin Parkway.

Colesloggett Halt is a peaceful wayside station set amidst beautiful scenery, located between Bodmin General and Bodmin Parkway. Opened by Bodmin Railway in 1993, it features a small picnic area. However, there is no car parking available for railway users at this station. The train will stop at Colesloggett Halt on its way to Bodmin Parkway if passengers wish, but steam engines will not stop here on the return journey to Bodmin General due to the steep gradient of the track.

For those with dietary requirements, the railway can cater to most needs, including gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options, in their coffee shops and on-board catering, with advance notice. Assistance dogs are welcome in all carriages and station buildings at no charge, though they must be kept on a lead and on the floor, keeping aisles and corridors clear.

The railway also offers unique experiences such as the “Evening Dining Train,” where passengers can enjoy a full three-course meal with tea/coffee and mints served to their table during a 13-mile return journey through the Cornish countryside. Advance booking is essential for this event.
